WILDLIFE PRESERVATION IN INDIA

WILDLIFE PRESERVATION IN INDIA

India is considered one of the 17 mega diversities in the world. However, the state of wildlife is constantly declining all over the world.

But the good news is that efforts are now being made to preserve the wildlife.

First of all, what is wildlife?

Wildlife refers to all the undomesticated animals and uncultivated plants. The flora and fauna in a jungle is a good example of that.

Humans are responsible for the extinction of around 106 species of animals and 139 species of birds in the last 2000 years.

The reasons for preservation of wildlife are:

  • Wildlife is important to keep the ecological balance in nature.
  • It also holds an aesthetic value as it brings us great joy to spend time in natural surroundings.
  • Scientific research benefits greatly from the wildlife.
  • Mankind depends on wildlife for fulfilling its various needs like medicinal plants help in the manufacture of ointments that heal us.
  • It is also morally wrong to destroy the habitats of animals as we have no right over them.

Some wildlife conservation projects going on in India are:

1.     PROJECT TIGER: One of the most successful conservation projects is Project Tiger, sponsored by the Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change. It was started way back in 1972. This project is focused on the recovery of habitat and increasing tiger population.

2.                 PROJECT ELEPHANT: Established in 1992 by the Government of India, the project aims to conserve the elephant population in India. It also tries to save elephants from poachers and unnatural death.

3.                 CROCODILE CONSERVATION PROJECT: This project was initiated back in 1975. Crocodiles were on the verge of extinction once and they are on a safe path now, thanks to the project by the Indian government. To increase the natural population quickly, they followed two techniques- 'grow and release' or 'rear and release'.

We need more projects like these to keep our wildlife preserved, not just in India but all over the world.

Kanha National Park is the biggest in Central India.
